Is it time for a new Toothbrush?

Australia Dental Burpengary

If your practicing good oral hygiene, you’re probably brushing twice a day for two minutes, using a fluoride toothpaste along with flossing daily. Most of us know our toothbrushes are not meant to last forever and it can be hard to know when they are nearing the end of their lifespan.

Your toothbrush is your first line of defence against the bacteria that cause gum disease, tooth decay, and bad breath. With brushing recommended two or more times per day at that rate of use, the bristles in your brush both manual and electric will start to fall out and become mangled or twisted within about 3 months, it is advised to replace your toothbrush every 3 to 4 months or whenever it appears to be getting worn out. If you travel frequently for work staying with friends or family and have a separate toothbrush that comes with you, we recommend switching it out every few months also.

To take the best care of your toothbrush, you should treat it the way you would any personal grooming or hygiene tool. Do not share it with anyone else, including members of your of even you immediate family. If your toothbrush is stored in a cup or container with other members of the family’s toothbrushes, try not to let the heads touch each other.
Once you have finished brushing, rinse your toothbrush completely with tap water. Do not store it in a closed container to try and keep it clean when it’s not in use as some of these containers can encourage mould growth and spread bacteria.

Other reasons you know it’s time to replace your toothbrush:

  • Bacterial and infections are of particular concern and are an important reason to switch your old toothbrush for a new one.
  • If you or a family member have been sick, it’s a good idea to replace your toothbrush as well as the toothbrush of everyone else in your household, especially if they are all kept together in the same holder.
  • If anyone else uses your toothbrush by mistake, get rid of it. It is better to be safe than sorry, and everyone’s mouth harbors different bacteria than yours.
